PC Technician: Role Overview

A PC Technician ensures the smooth operation of computer systems by installing, configuring, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining hardware and software components. This professional serves as a key technical support resource in both corporate and institutional environments.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Hardware & Software Installation

Assemble and configure desktops, laptops, peripherals (printers, scanners), and networking equipment.

Systems Maintenance

Conduct routine preventive maintenance and software updates to ensure system reliability and security.

Troubleshooting & Support

Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues—delivered remotely or in-person.

Imaging & Deployment

Perform device imaging, OS installation, and system deployment across user environments.

Inventory & Documentation

Maintain accurate logs of repair activities, hardware assets, configurations, and system updates.

User Training & Communication

Provide technical assistance and guidance to end-users, simplifying complex information into user-friendly advice.

Network Support (where applicable)

Help with basic network hardware setup and troubleshooting, including cabling and connectivity.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Education & Certifications

A High School diploma with certifications like CompTIA A+, Network+, or MCITP; some roles prefer Diploma or Bachelor’s in IT or related fields.
Academic institutions may require a Bachelor’s degree and several years’ experience.

Technical Competence

Strong knowledge of computer internal components (CPU, RAM, storage, graphics, RAID).
Proficiency with operating systems (Windows, macOS) and software suites (e.g., MS Office).

Problem Solving & Diagnostic Ability

Capable of identifying and resolving complex IT issues through logical analysis.

Soft Skills

Excellent communication, customer service, and teamwork abilities crucial for user support.

Physical & Operational Requirements

Ability to lift and move PC equipment (ranges of 25–50 lbs) and work well under pressure.

Documentation and Record-Keeping

Meticulous in maintaining logs, ticketing, and documentation for troubleshooting and audits.
