Job Purpose: Why This Role Matters

Brights Hardware is seeking a highly energetic and customer-focused General Assistant for our busy Building Department at the Blackheath branch.

The primary purpose of this role is to deliver exceptional customer service to both external clients and internal team members, including delivery and transfer drivers. As the face of our Building Yard, you will ensure that the environment is clean, safe, and highly organized. By managing the accurate loading of building materials and keeping stock meticulously sorted, you will directly prevent stock losses, maximize operational efficiency, and guarantee that every customer leaves satisfied. Your dedication will ensure our customers keep returning, driving the store’s sales and long-term profitability.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

As a General Assistant in the Building Department, your daily duties will span customer service, logistics support, stock control, and general housekeeping. Your core responsibilities will include:

1. Customer Service & Order Fulfillment

  • Prompt and Accurate Loading: Efficiently load customer vehicles, delivery trucks, and inter-branch transfer trucks with the correct materials and quantities.

  • Frontline Customer Support: Greet customers warmly, assist them in locating building supplies, and offer basic product knowledge to ensure a seamless shopping experience.

  • Material Preparation: Assist with manual tasks unique to the building yard, such as the bagging of bulk stone, gravel, and sand.

2. Inventory Management & Stock Control

  • Stock Stacking & Organizing: Ensure all building materials (bricks, cement, timber, steel, etc.) are stacked neatly, safely, and systematically according to company safety standards.

  • Accurate Stock Counting: Utilize basic numerical skills to count incoming and outgoing stock precisely during routine checks and transfers.

  • Stock Procurement Support: Assist in pulling and preparing stock items for internal company transfers between Brights Hardware branches.

  • Proactive Reporting: Immediately report any stock shortages, discrepancies, or damaged/broken goods to the Yard Supervisor or Department Manager to maintain inventory accuracy.

  • Perpetual Stocktakes: Actively participate in regular and periodic stocktaking processes to minimize variances and shrinkage.

3. Housekeeping, Safety, & General Support

  • Yard Cleanliness: Maintain a spotless and hazard-free working environment by sweeping common areas, organizing pallets, and upholding excellent housekeeping practices.

  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with drivers, yard staff, and sales consultants to ensure a smooth workflow.

  • Ad-Hoc Tasks: Perform any other reasonable, work-related duties as delegated by your supervisor or management team to support the overall success of the branch.

Job Requirements: What We Are Looking For

To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent recognized qualification.

  • Experience: A minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar retail hardware, building yard, warehousing, or logistics environment is highly preferred.

  • Numerical Literacy: Strong basic math skills with the ability to count large volumes of stock accurately.

  • Customer Focus: A proven ability to interact professionally with the public, delivering friendly and helpful customer service under all circumstances.

  • Physical Fitness: This is a physically demanding role. Candidates must possess the stamina, strength, and physical fitness required to lift, stack, and move heavy building materials (such as cement bags, bricks, and timber) throughout the day.

  • Soft Skills:

    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaborate effectively as a team player.

    • Exceptional self-discipline, punctuality, and high intrinsic motivation.

    • Resilience and the ability to maintain accuracy and a positive attitude while working under pressure in a fast-paced retail environment.

    • Strong verbal communication skills in order to interact clearly with customers and colleagues.
